gpxExchange support

gpxExchange is a free Microsoft® MapPoint add-in that imports and exports data to GPX formatted files. It allows you to display in MapPoint the waypoints, routes, and tracks you've collected using your GPS, and use MapPoint to author new waypoints, routes, and tracks for your GPS.

common issues

When I open MapPoint I see the following error message:

This message usually appears when required system .dll files are not present. These files should get installed by the gpxExchange installer but may be omitted if your system directory is protected. Check your windows/system32 directory to verify that the following files are present: MSVCP70.DLL and MSBCR70.DLL.

The routes and tracks in my gpx file don't appear after I import them into MapPoint

Check the version number of your .gpx file. To see the version number, open the .gpx file in Notepad and look for the version number in the <gpx tag. gpxExchange does not yet fully support version 1.1 gpx files.

If I import a .gpx file then immediately export it, the exported file is much smaller than the original

MapPoint doesn't support all of the waypoint, track, and route properties that may be stored in your original .gpx file. For example, your GPS may record the elevation and acquisition time with each track point. This data is lost when imported into MapPoint.

I installed gpxExchange but when I launch MapPoint it doesn't appear.

If you are using MapPoint 2002 you must select "just me" when installing. The "all users" option is only supported by MapPoint 2004.

reporting problems

I have tested gpxExchange pretty extensively on Windows XP machines, less so under other versions of Windows. I would appreciate hearing about any problems (or successes!) you have with gpxExchange. Please email details to gpxExchange@rogers.com. If appropriate, include the .gpx or MapPoint .ptm file you find it to be incompatible with gpxExchange. As my real-life includes daytime employment and frequent travel I can't guarantee when I'll be able to provide a fix, but I will endeavor to respond as fast as I can
