Fortynine Palms is a popular hike on the northern edge of Joshua Tree National Park. Access to the hike trailhead is not through one of the main park roads, rather it is at the end of Canyon Road just west of Twentynine Palms on Hwy 62. There are roadsigns near Canyon Road pointing to Fortynine Palms. The short drive up Canyon Road is through a residential area, then winds into the park grounds and terminates at a parking lot. There are pit toilets available at the parking lot.

As a desert hike, be sure you have ample water supply before starting out. Even though it is not a long hike, it is somewhat strenuous, so prepare accordingly.

The reward for this hike is a rich oasis at the end of the trail where palm trees thrive and many birds and animals come for a drink. After arriving in the canyon you can continue over some boulders and though some brush to see even more palm trees and to get a better view of the oasis.

The return portion of the hike is back along the same trail, up the canyon then back down again.
